I've been draining my water when I do a change (20-25) gallons into my toilet but I am worried when I vacuum the substrate some of its going down the pipes and could settle in the system and effect the toilet.. (first should I even be worried about that) and second if I just drain it out the window onto the lawn will it kill it? I have St. Augustine here in the south.
    THANKS!

I do not believe that small amount of sand will affect the performance of your sanitary system.

Not sure how well your specific turf is suited to the high salinity - but most grasses at least up here in the mid-atlantic region will eventually die when subjected to hypersaline conditions.

Even if you have a septic system the saltwater would not affect the performance of your system. All of the detergents and soaps we flush into those systems are quite a deal more reactive and potentially harmful than saltwater.

now if that was a FW tank - I'd recommend dumping on your lawn - you are re-using waste and providing excellent usable nutrients to your plants!

Thanks. I used to do it with my FW system. I guess if you think about what goes down the drain from the washing machine its probably just as much sediment.

+1 on the odd bit of sand going down multiple toilet systems in my time not being an issue

the only time I have had to call out a plumber due to a blocked toilet I could not sort with the plunger
and a plecostomus catfish was found to be the issue

no burials at sea , for any future spiney fish from me

I agree. It will kill your grass/plants. I had to do an emergency drain, and dumped 20 gallons into my porch area plants(weeds) and within the week they were all dead. I normally use my bathtub to dump. No problems thusfar.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it will brown out the grass and kill it if you dump it in your yard. I simply do water changes in the kitchen sink with the garbage disposal unit running, mostly just to suck the water down faster. I only have 40 gallons to contend with though...

Oh and just noticed that you live in Mt. P! I used to live on Anna Knapp Blvd.

Yeah, no known problems with a decade of flushing down the toilet. I couldn't think of a more effective way to kill grass though...

I killed a big patch of grass in the backyard when I first started by draining water out there. Just once.
