Should I be doing water changes during my cycling period? Just added water and live rock from existing tank, but my buddy says I need to do lots of water changes rite now. Seems wrong to me and can't find anything that says I should

No you dont want to do water changes during the cycle, it will only prolong it. Maybe he was thinking of curing live rock. Then you do water changes, but this is done in a separate Rubbermaid tub or such. If your rock came from an already running tank then it is already cured.

your buddy is wrong. there is some debate on it, but not in my mind.

the tank is going through chemical and biological changes and you want this to happen. WC just gets in the way and slows it down.

you don't want to manually remove ammonia, for example, bc you want the tank to populate enough bacteria to handle it, etc.

just let it run its course.
