I've never heard of that, but this is what I have seen used in reefs before:

Oh, I'am sorry. The Aquasonic, Rotating Arm assembly is the old school way of what the drip plate does in the wet/dry trickle filter. I think it spreads water more evenly, than a drip plate, over the bio media.

 

it spreads more evenly until something decides to clog the spray bar. I prefered drip plates over spray bars
