After recently scaping my 90, Ive gotta vote for the 120. that extra 6" front to back will really help. You need large rocks to safely scape for the height and i couldnt do it without leaning a few against the back wall.
Unless you're putting it in a hallway or somewhere strange, I dont see how it could possibly ruin a room.
And as mentioned, you wont really save anything equipment wise going the 90.

Send her on a nice weekend vacation, move the 180 in, transfer everything over and when she returns just yell, "SURPRISE!!!!!!"

But seriously I would do the 120 for more water volume and space.

Go for the 180 and get it set up. It is easier to beg forgiveness then it is to get permission. Besides once it is set up and has fishes and coral she will love it. My wife faught the 180 but now that it is in and full she loves it.

    good luck

I'd think a 180 would be pushing it. It appears DRAMATICALLY larger than a 120.

The 120 is, IMO, the perfect mid-sized tank. If you're going to have a reef then you really need 24". I've owned both a 90 reef and a 120 reef and I can tell you unequivocally that the 120 was, by far, the superior tank of the two. Not just because of the scaping, but also because you can effectively view it from three sides. A 90 isn't a great view from the ends.

Tell your wife that the 90 will not look as good for a number of reasons and that the 120 won't cost appreciably more as most equipment you'd use on a 90 will work just as well on a 120.

You could also throw in that the 120 will have better resale value, but that's stretching it a bit... :)

I think you'd be regretting the 90 the entire time you owned it.

EDIT: One more thing... with 24" you can put a mid-tank overflow in. You can't to that on a 90. The benefit of a mid-tank overflow is that you keep the ends clean for viewing.

EDIT EDIT: If you can't convince her and all else fails, take her to a LFS that has both on display.
