Got a few questions for vortech owners. I'm looking to upgrade my koralia's to a vortech. I have a 55 gallon mix reef. Which vortech should I get? 2 mp10's or 1 single mp40w? Would one mp20 be sufficient for a 55 gallon?

The 2 MP10s would get you a better distributed flow, but not very strong. A single MP40 will be a much stronger flow, but these tend to taper out at about 4 feet.

I am not sure exactly how much flow a single 40 will get you in a 55. It will get you a lot, just not sure on specifics.

That being said, I love mine. I have a single MP40 in a 6 foot tank. Plan on adding one more.

I have 1 mp40w in my 120 gallon mixed reef and it rocks I do plan on adding a second one this year but one is good for now it does move a lot of water. If you got a mp40 in the 55 gallon it would be capable of really churning up that tank don't forget you can throttle it down if you want I would say get the mp40 and you will be set for that tank and ready for your next "bigger tank"::);)

two mp10 would be better since the mp10 is rated for up to 50g at 1575gph
1 mp20 is rated for 70g at 2000gph or u could always go mp20 now and if u ever go bigger u can upgrade to the mp40 for 100.00 bucks

Thanks for the inputs. Also have another question. When the vortech pump recover from a power outage, will the flow amount and mode I set the pump remain the same or will I have to reset everything?

I'm planning on buying the mp40w. I'll probably be ordering it tonight. Any other thoughts or comments on the vortechs?

Vortechs are awesome, I love mine, I have 2 MP40s and an MP10.

I really would probably go with 2 MP10's. Having flow from both sides of the tank will provide much better circulation and will help eliminate dead spots around the rocks etc. Even though the MP40 has random modes it's still only flow from one direction.

If you are stuck on the MP40 (not necessarily a bad thing) I would keep another powerhead, a koralia or something on the other side to compete with flow when the MP40 is at the bottom of it's energy cycle. FWIW I have an MP40 on my 30g right now dialed almost all the way down with a koralia 1 on the other side of the tank and it's working pretty nicely, I would much rather have 2 MP10s though I think but I'm planning on moving the MP40 to my 75 soon once I take the 30g down.

The only reason I'm leaning towards the mp40w is because I plan upgrade to a 90 gallon sooner or later, and I don't think the 2 mp10's would be enough for a 90 gallon.
