Hi. I have been thinking about vodka dosing recently to drop my nitrates. So I was wondering is it worth trying? is it dangerous? should I dose a different carbon source? ect.

I used vodka in the past to bring down nitrates temporarily and it works really well. It also encourages cyanobacter. I would not use it as a long term solution. Consider biopellets, prodibio, etc. I use biopellets and haven't tried the rest, but there are loads of folks happy with several different systems.

Works 100% with problem algaes, I did it for about a month which took care of the problem.

Check out this link on how to - be VERY specific in your dosing as it can be dangerous if not done correctly. I followed these instructions and it took care of my cyano problem - quit dosing 6 weeks ago or so and no problems since.

Yes, read the above article. It is easy to do, but can be detrimental if done improperly. Make sure you have a powerful skimmer, as that is the export method for vodka/vinegar. The cyano issue might have been related, might have been coincidence. I have been dosing vodka for over a year, on two systems, and never had any cyano issues.
