and just to add on this the more light the faster the VC is used up. so in about 8 hours there is no VC left that is why you would want to does 2x a day.

as ocean man said there are many things you do not test for. you need to use simple math and others experience to determine the amount to use

    Thanks

Makes sense I didn't realize it was a carbon source. I saw mention of selcon as a comparison. How does Vit C compare to something like that. (I use selcon occasionally)

Would you ever use this in conjunction with a carbon source like Ecoback pellets. Or would they possibly support different bacteria chains?

How do you know how much to dose for roughly 5ppm? I can't seem to find any dosing info for saltwater tanks. The only info I see is that 1/4 tsp contains 1112mg of Vit C. So, for a 20g tank would that mean mix 1/4 tsp in a cup of tank water and then dose 1/11 of that?

    1112mg (1112ppm?) /20 = 55.6 /11 = 5.05.

The vitamin C in Selcon and other food soaks is primarily for fish health. However, there will be some that will be bioavailable for corals for a short period of time after feeding. (Remember, it's highly unstable) This amount is much smaller than dosing your tank.

The first person who can prove different bacteria chains will be guaranteed a bunch of speaking fees. LOL This is a question that would be very challenging (read as EXPENSIVE) to prove. I personally wouldn't use both on the same day unless you are very careful. I could easily see a bacteria bloom so large all your water would turn gray.

BTW....I think it's funny that this whole discussion started with an article from Albert Thiel. Most of you youngons have probably never heard of him.

With the instability of VC, can you still use a standard dosing pump to dose it?

I am curious the stuff you are using is sodium ascorbate. I went to a health food store and could only find calcium ascorbate powder.
The bottle says ph neutral vitamin c buffered with calcium.

Is this ok to dose with. I am wondering if this calcium would be good for tank or not?

okay through my research about the different types of vitamin c, itried to find the sodium ascorbate one but could only find the calcium based one. If the only difference is one has sodium and one has calcium by using the calcium one i'll just simply also be adding in small amounts of calcium. to me this seems better than a sodium based one. Any one here know anything mroe about this?

Sodium ascorbate: 1,000 mg of sodium ascorbate contains 889 mg of ascorbic acid and 111 mg of sodium. Individuals following low-sodium diets (e.g., for high blood pressure) are generally advised to keep their total dietary sodium intake to less than 2,500 mg/day. Megadoses of sodium ascorbate could significantly increase sodium intake.

Calcium ascorbate: 1,000 mg of calcium ascorbate generally provides 890-910 mg of ascorbic acid and 90-110 mg of calcium. Calcium in this form appears to be reasonably well absorbed. The recommended dietary calcium intake for adults is 1,000 to 1,200 mg/day. Total calcium intake should not exceed the tolerable upper intake level of 2,500 mg/day.
