No you don't. You can get an Overflow box that hangs on the back of your tank. As they told me, drilling your tank is beneficial, but if its already up and running, a simple HOB overflow will do just fine.

what kind of space do you have below your tank? im guessing with a 30 gallon your tank is 36" so anything from a simple 10 gallon (20") to a 24" or 30" tank would work.

There are no stupid guestions, although there are some stuoid answers, hopefully mine will help.Refugiums work great for controling water quality by providing a place for macroalgae, which is plant life, to grow, also natural fish food such as copepods and rotifers. You may not need one for a 30 gal. as you can control watewr quality with water chenges fairly easily, that is unless your looking for pristine water such as you need for sps corals. If you would like you can set up a hang on or in tank refugium very cheaply.I use an in tank one in my 44gal. tank and it works pretty well. Cost me twelve dollars to make and reduced my nitrates from 20ppm to less than 5,almost undetectable. If you would like to know more about "doing it the right way",just scroll down the forums list to the left to "refgiums" and check out the threads. Good Luck!! Dave

As they say "Bigger is better". As big as you are comfortable with. You could have one as big as your tank. As I understand the smaller the sump, less room, the less filtration media you can fit into it, less overflow it can handle.
The Bigger it is, the better the filtration, the more overflow, the more hardware you can hide and keep out of your tank.
That said the final decision is up to you.
Go on youtube and search "How to make a sump" and you will find some nice vids that will help you.
