No such thing as a stupid question :). A sump is a chamber usually below your tank that acts as a filter. it can be used to hold pumps and protein skimmers, live rock, heater or reactors. this takes care of your mechanical, and chemical filtration and frees up room in your display tank so there is not as much equipment up there. Often people have a sump/fuge combo. the fuge is just as the name implies. a refugium or a safe place for algaes and microscopic organisms to live without predation. sometimes fuges have deep sand beds (DSB), macro algae, and live rock which help take care of biological filtration and chemical filtration.

as for need, it really depends on the person. you can buy a custom one or you can even make one out of an old tank. depends greatly on what kind of tank and inhabitants you want to keep. in my opinion, you could never go wrong with a sump

Do some more searching here on 3reef, there tons of info and pictures to help you should you decide to build a sump. Hope this was helpful and goodluck!

There are no stupid questions on this forum, only safe questions.
A sump is a tank that can sit under your main tank that has separate chambers in it for different kinds of filtration material. A sump (Also know as a wet/dry filter) can also hold your protein skimmer, heater and can hold a Fuge. A fuge is a section in the sump that can house macro algae, live rock, live sand, and on occasion some livestock.
I think I got the basics down, but I will let a more knowledgeable 3reefer explain further.

Heres a thread that I had started because I honestly didnt know what to do either. On the first page SCREWTAPE posted a very helpful link that you may want to check out!

If you choose... you dont have to, you'll only have even more filtration :)

Some people will say "Ditch it" and some will tell you to keep it. In the end it's really what you prefer and what you think you and your tank can handle.

Here is another extremely helpful link for sump designs.

only perk is you will have more filtration. however, i would caution about what you keep in your canister filter. for example, sponges and bioballs can/might create more nitrates then someone would want. some swear by these but personally im not a big fan. my tank runs strictly on liverock, protein skimming, dsb and macro algae. no problems (knock on wood), happy fish, and crystal clear water.
