So I have to go on vacation for about a week, I have no one who knows anything about salt water. And I don't have ATO .. should I portion out the food and have them just put half a gallon in a day?

'have to go on vacation' - Is that even possible? lol.

I think you have a good plan for what you should do already.

Do you have a local service company that does scheduled vacation check-ups and what kind of fish/livestock do you have? If its something that may survive on regular pellet/flake feedings, than consider an auto-feeder, eheim makes a great one.

I would think that water level would be more important that feeding for one week. Sounds like your plan will work, may just want to show them where the water level should be and fill to that level.

Before I had an ATO I used a marker and put a line on my sump and put add water at this level. That way my friends could just look and see if they should add water. Also I showed them about how much food to feed daily. Your friends don't need to know much about salt water tanks to take care of your tank for a week. They just need to be responsible and follow through with your instructions. I also wrote detailed instructions for one friend.

Yea its possible. I dont really feel like going to ohio in the middle of no where with no cell phone service but... yea unfortunately thats where the family lives

Yea I have the lines drawn... I just don't have a responsible friend im rather worried, and I dont want to pay to have a service come do it.. ughhh I really don't want to leave it. I have been having issues with it lately and I myself have been monitoring it closely.

As long as someone adds water every third day and feeds at least every 2-3 days, you should be ok. We are only talking a week right? Granted I know nothing about your system.

yea It would be about a week to 10 days it kinda depends.. I don't even know im just being forced to go along with it.. max would be ten days.. I think I could find someone to feed it I could just show them how much to feed, and adding water isn't really the hardest thing on the planet :p

I only feed my tank about once maybe twice a week when im home, so they will be fine without food just make sure you hide any salt cause you dont want them thinking they need to mix it when the top off that would be very bad lol

I went on vacation for 10 days last month and my tank was very dirty when I got back. I have a DIY top off, and the neighbors fed the fish once a day. But still, it was amazing how dirty everything looked when I got back.

You can make a DIY auto top-off for like $20. Just need a float switch, cord, and small pump.
