does anyone have any knowkedge, thoughts or experience with uv treatments. my lfs suggested a portable unit to go into tank for certain period of time and water flows through and gets zapped with uv.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
A UV will only kill what is in the water column. Marine Ich does not stay within the water column and there for is ineffective as treatment.

I would save my money. I have used them in 1000's of gallons of water when caring for sealions and very large marine systems.

For the average home aquarium I have never used one and never had the need to in decades.

Yes wonderful animals but full of parasites and other nasties like pox.

A UV can be effective with algae blooms and bacterial blooms and large tanks that have large fish such as tangs, wrasses and such.

Even if I had the money to burn, I would get soooooo many other useful things. Like quality test kits, refractometers, pH probes, lights.............
