Do most people use them? What is the school of thought on them?
I am tempted to buy one but afraid it will kill the good things too...is that a legitimate concern?

I have a 135 gallon tank...and its FOWLER right now, but going to soft corals very soon.

Just wondering if its safe in this application and if so what are the recommended ones to get...size for 135 and brands!

    Thanks!

Are you planning on making one? I have never heard of anyone doing that.

If you plan on making a UV sterilizer, I'll move this thread back to the diy forum. In the meantime, you can find it here in the filters etc forum.

If you do plan on making one, take lots of pictures, I'm sure that is homepage worthy. I have never used one and the general consensus, if you have a reef, is not to use one.

I have a Coralife Turbo Twist. I was experiencing a phytoplankton bloom last week. At the time it looked like we would be putting our house up for sale, and I didn't want 110 gallons of unsightly green water to turn off potential buyers! So, I picked up the Coralife Turbo Twist and had crystal clear water in about 4 days.

Keep in mind that using it for that purpose is treating the symptoms of a problem, and not treating the cause. I had water chemistry issues that I also took steps to correct.

As for pathogens, think of it as preventative measure. With good water flow, you will be reducing the number of pathogens in the water. It will only kill things that are actually in the water column though. It won't kill ich in its spore stage, or if it is actually visible on your fish.

In short, they have their uses, but they aren't a substitute for always following best practices for maintaining your tank.
