So I had recently installed an overflow to my tank that draws water from the entire back side of the tank, and I thought "Hey this would be a cool place to put my carbon". I had not really been using carbon much before and I added about 2 cups worth.
The next morning most of my fish were dead but my Inverts were fine

Dead (in order of death, all within a day)
    1. Flame Angel
    2. Hippo Tang
    3. yellow tail damsel fish
    4. Gold head Golby

    Stressed
    1. my two percula clowns
    2. chetomorphia

    seemingly unaffected
    1. Finger coral
    2. xenias
    3. mushroom corals
    4. cleaner shrimp

Did I just add the carbon too fast? I thought that wasn't even that much

I did a mega water change and took the carbon out an everything seems to be fine know. But that took a significant blow to my confidence in buying expensive fish.

    Any ideas

I don't think you can really have negative effects when adding carbon. It is a nutrient exporter, meaning it shouldn't be releases nutrients into the tank unless it's been in there for a while.

We need your aquarium's water parameters. that will help a lot.

Have you done anything else to the tank recently? Have you added livestock, etc?

I think it has to be something other than simply adding carbon to your aquarium. Also, how long has the tank been running (after your initial cycle)? ...and what size tank are we talking, here?

I don't have too much more information.

The tank has been running for about 4 months now. It had 6 small fish in it, my largest was the flame angel. I had not added a new fish for 3 weeks.

The tank is about 60 gallons with a 25 gallon Sump
I checked the temperature, ammonia and salinity which were all quite regular.

The cheto was pretty interesting about half of it just turned white and died, but the other half seems to be fine now.

I was thinking maybe there was too much flow on the carbon and it changed the water chemistry too quickly. I spread it along the top of my overflow so each grain of it was exposed to direct flow.

Was your carbon put in a sock of some sort or did you just free hand the carbon? Did you rinse it before you placed it in the overflow?

You need to tell us more parameters such as nitrite and nitrate and give us concrete numbers instead of saying that they looked ok.
