Apologies in advance if this is a redundant post. Thought it got posted earlier but I can't find it.

    Anyhow...

I've been cruising CL and a few other sources for used aquariums and most of what I find has that gawd awful* oak trim around the rim. Can that trim be painted safely? Is there a certain type and/or brand of paint that needs to be used to avoid contaminating the water? Other ideas to change the color? Thanks for any suggestions.

*obviously that's personal opinion, no offense to those of you who like the oak look. :)

I would think the best bet would be taking it off and spray painting it. Or tape up around the area really good and spray paint it. any overspray should come off with ease with a flat razor blade.

I thought that might be the case. My main concern is stuff leaching off the paint and fouling the water... Is that a concern if it's given a good amount of time for the paint to cure prior to exposing it to salt water?

    The outside, once dry?

You don't want the brown on the inside and want to paint the inside?

Keep looking for a black trim them, one will turn up.

No, wasn't planning on painting the inside. Just wanted to make certain there weren't any problems with doing this and it sounds like there aren't. Not in a hurry, so will continue to look for a black one unless there's too good a deal to pass up...

    Thanks for the input guys.

You can use Krylon Fusion spray paint with no issues and it bonds to plastic.
