Ouch sorry to hear that I recommend and magnetic glass brush. be sure to clean it good because there is lots of bacteria in salt water. As far as the blood I dont know hope you dont have sharks. =) Just Kidding hopping to make you smile.

Haha no glad i dont have sharks.

My urchin's great but it got me good. 5 holes straight threw the back of my hand.

I'm going to do a water change in the morning just in case.
    Thanks.

Wouldn't worry about water change as much as I would the possibility that you might have a piece or two of urchin spine in your hand. If swelling doesn't go down you might want to have a doctor look at it. The little bit of blood in your tank isnt going to hurt anything.

    Thanks.
My hands swollen, and where it got my is dark purple because of how deep it went :-(.

They are a hell of a creature, cant imagine them having too many natural preditors in the wild.

I think you have learned your lesson! BE CAREFUL! ALWAYS WEAR GLOVES (preferably made of PVC) and PROTECTIVE GLASSES. It may sound funny but better be safe than sorry! There are many dangerous bacterial strains found in marine water: causing tuberculosis, mycobacteriace... and many more! On top of that lots of protein toxins secreted by soft corals; especially by zoanthids!

THE NUMBER ONE PREDATOR OF URCHINS IS THE TRIGGERFISH.
Your main concern is making sure that your hand doesn't become infected! Take the time to sterilize the would to avoid problems down the road!
I love Urchins, but like so many animals we house in our aquariums, they demand respect as some of them can really pose a health concern.
Some fish, corals and invertebrates not to mention just getting a cut from scrapping against your live rock or piece of equipment_bacteria...can enter your bloodstream!
Be careful and clean thoroughly and wash hands every time you play around your tank(s)!
Most of all have fun and be safe...
No one wants to hear about a fellow reefer having to go to the hospital!

the wolf eal snacks on urchins all the time.bites right through the spines.people that step on urchins can treat the wound by either peeing on it or dumping vinegar on it.i'm thinking about getting a pencil urcgin, they seem safer

Pencil urchin sounds good. I don't want the spikey kind. ......for the above reason.
