Well, of course they do. That's why you have to use very sharp scissors. You don't want to crush the spines, you want to cut them. You basically want to trim the outer, longer, spines. Those spines are mainly for protection and break off all the time. The proliferation of shorter spines are the ones that are real sensitive.

It's kind of like trimming your dogs nails. The nail at the end is very numb but if you cut all the way back to their nerves and vein, they will react very badly. Same thing with an urchin. If he would have accidentally trimmed too far, trust me, you would have seen in in the video. I messed up once and went too far in.

    wow..
    Allot of feed back...first of all... hey Casey " I got your SALLY ! " LOL : ) I been stung buy that sum*****...not cool..at all. : ) gloves are a must.
..and just as an FYI.....to the ...I might have hurt him folks...I would never intentionally harm any living creature.., that I was'nt gonna eat ; ) ...but this guy would have lost ALL his spines if I would have just been ****'n around and grabbing at him...it was how I made VERY fast work of this task , yes a plan was in place before I just reached in and started gabbing....so, trust me...He is very fine now..piss'd off ...YES...but hes over it now.... and much happier...believe it.
    Thanx ya'all...nice feedback.

If he's happier and healthier in the end, I dont see what the big deal would be.

Hey gang, I want to make something clear. I have given many an urchin a haircut. I certainly wouldn't do it if I thought I was harming it in any fashion. In fact, this trick was taught to me by a marine biologist who runs a very large public aquarium. They break these long spines all the time. It's like a mosquito bite to them.

Keeping a favored urchin in a well run aquarium is preferable to turning it into a LFS who will sell it to someone who has a tank covered with hair algae because their nitrates are 120.

LOL....I had a diadema in an 850g whose body was VERY large. Certainly not softball size, but he was a monster. I had to give him haircuts even in this tank because he would accidentally stab some of the show-size angels, tangs, and such. You can't allow an urchin to accidentally harm a $800 rare angel for obvious reasons. Yeah, I named them all, but in the end....those fish were inventory and the electric company doesn't care if you lost an expensive fish....they seem to want to be paid. LOL
