Thanks all, but the news is getting grim. The SPS are all goners and the leptastrea is starting to peel.

I got a call from Ryan at RE and they will replace everything with free shipping as UPS will be reimbursing them.

Good thing you got your money back, but UPS should be forced to pay that amount both to replace your corals and to a reef conservation fund. It's not like this whole ordeal has no environmental impact.

horrible idea. The insurance payout is the penalty for poor business practices. If ever some sort of penalty such as this ever came about, you can be sure ALL major shippers would abandon shipping live corals or at least deny being able to purchase insurance. I say its a privilege to be able to FLY a live animal across the country and put it in your tank.

Darn straight. We're very lucky they allow livestock to be shipped. IIRC both FedEx and UPS have a nor live animal guarantee.

They also didn't provide service as they sold it. The direct result of that is the deaths of (potentially irreplaceable and/or unique) livestock. The livestock just happens to come from an extremely very fragile ecosystem; it's not a cricket, that, besides still being a living thing, is an animal we have, and can breed, so many of as a society that we would not know what to do with a large portion of them. We don't catch crickets, or cats, or dogs, to sell, but it would be just as wrong for them to die during shipment because of a mistake by a carrier when the package is declared "livestock".

Even if they would deny insurance, they should STILL have to pay the cost of the animals to a reef conservation fund when they don't provide the proper level of service to a package labeled livestock. That way, they don't get a choice but to follow through with providing overnight service when they sell overnight service, especially when lives are on the line.

Besides, they really can't tell what's in the box without an x-ray machine; I don't have to declare what livestock I'm shipping with any company, just that it is livestock. They can guess from the weight and size of the package, but they really don't know unless your stuff says "CORALS!" on the outside.

I'm just advocating for a law where someone has to be liable for "negligent care of animal" while it's knowingly in their care. Oh, wait, it already exists - just not regularly enforced for corals, the most sensitive animals from the most fragile ecosystem that are regularly shipped.

    EDIT:
Wow. That's totally wrong. The insurance payout is them giving you money that they collected from other customers who paid for insurance in case they mess up on your shipment. It's not them "being hit with a penalty"....it's them "making a miniscule amount less profit".
LMFAO. UPS will discard your live animal shipment, regardless as to it being a breeding pair of komodo dragons, and the discovery happening at Tampa airport....

You don't see that UPS isn't really following their own regulations?

They just claimed total non-liability for animal shipments. Yet they paid up, as if they were liable somehow. They may have just told the insurance company that they happened to mess up, but you know, that's admitting liability to that company instead of RE.
