I am no expert though I will say this much, there are several questions that need to be asked before we can give an accurate answer.

Is your tank reef ready or do you want a HOB?

What are your intentions with the tank?

Are you going FOWLR, Corals, inverts etc, this way we can help you with the flow rate you need. from reading on this forum, most people are saying 40-50x is what you want (again this will vary with your answers to my question)

To calculate your flow rate, you take your powerheads/pumps etc. and add up there GPH then divide by the size of your tank.

    For example I have 2 Hydro 1400 and a 9.5 Mag pump. SO it's 1400+1400+950 = 3750 / 125 (size of my tank) = 30x

Hopefully I am steering you in the direction or someone with more knowledge than I can will correct me if I mislead you or back me up :)

I'll assume you've got a sump so can go with an in-sump skimmer.

    For flow rate:

I am a big fan of the Sicce Voyager series pumps. They are relatively low cost for the flow rate they provide and do well in on-off scenarios (e.g. wave makers). My recommendation would be two of the 1600 gph versions. That combined with a decent sized return pump (900 gph or so) would give you close to 40x tank size flow in the tank and 8x to the sump. For the return, a Mag 9.5 is a little light, but marginally acceptable. A Mag 12 would be better (slightly over powered, but could be throttled back if necessary).

    For skimmers:

I like the Reef Octopus skimmers for value. Super Reef Octopus XP 2000 IN-SUMP Cone Protein Skimmer by CoralVue - AquaCave

hey rocket! Thank you for the write-up. I think ill go ahead and order what you recommend. hopefully I'll have the new setup running this weekend and I dont lose too many corals. My Kole tang is gonna LOVE the new tank i think!
