I still have a few weeks until I take everything out of my 29g and put it into my 40g breeder. I still have a few things to do first, but I was trying to get some advice on how exactly I would make the transition. I have a 20lb bag of live sand and 25lbs of live rock in there now. I will be buying another 20lbs of live sand and another 20lbs of live rock. The live rock will be cured, and I will be making the extra 11 or so gallons of water with RO/DI water.
Walk me through step buy step on how to upgrade the right way. Thanks all.

I would get another bag of dry sand instead of transferring the old sand over. It can be more of a problem than it is worth. Also I would have more saltwater handy at least 10 gallons more. 40 breeders hold almost 45 gallons when empty.

Put the sand in place and cover completely with plastic wrap. Gently add the new water that you have heated to the same temp as your old tank and has the same pH and other parameters. Add some water from the old tank until the new tank is 2/3 full. Then start moving the live rock in. After the live rock is moved add enough water to make sure it is completely covered if it is not. Catch and move the livestock. Fill to your desired height and get the filtration equipment running. Keep the lights off for the rest of the day to keep stress to a minimum for your livestock.

I've had the sand since oct. I siphon it every week when I do my water change. Do you still think I should toss it? I know the tank is over 40 gallons. It's actually 47.69 gallons. I forgot to mention that I will be running a 20g long for a refugium

The reason for tossing is to keep organics in the sand from getting loose in the tank and causing a cycle or other similar problems. Your decision. Just have all your plumbing done for the sump and have it filled before you start your transfer.
