You have to really factor in how much money and time you will loose if the power goes out. Would probably pay for two or three generators. I just went with a automatic switch gear cause I don't want the worries of cords all over the place and having to store fuel for it. Mine runs on LP and I have a 300 lb tank outside that will run it for a week or so if needed.

I have to swicth mine manually, but if I was to do it right I'd go to HD, Lowes and get the 9k watt with the auto transfer for $2k and you must have some sort of transfer or you will kill someone. That I keep telling my SIL.

Down here we can go 3-4 days without power depending on the reason. Longest was 2 weeks during a blizzard. We have a 5k watt power interver which i will put into my girls Cavy as it burns hardly any gas and run the extension cord for the tanks.

ok! so it went out and i basically stayed up all night manually stirring the water and re-filling up water jugs with warm water. I would pour the water into the tank from about 3 feet so i could create some movement in the water. I think next time im going to get a power inverter and run an extension cord from it into my house. and maybe find a battery powered air pump and warmer. Nothing died thankfully!

good for you, I would go and get something so this doesnt happen again.. Do you live in a place where you could run a generator, as in a house or atleast an APT with a balcony? If I were you I would really look into generators, as they can keep more than your tank alive if power outages are a concern..

Might be easier if you purchased a UPS. What if your not home next time?

Most UPS's are as much if not more than a generator and don't last nearly as long. I would go generator if you can. You can use it to run a space heater as well as your tank. You need to keep your self alive too.

Remember if you're going to use a generator run it OUTSIDE. You would be surprised how many people think it's ok to run them inside or in their basements. Too many people die from CO poisoning.
