Whats going on?? whats going on?? why do i have this sudden jump of nitrate?? 2 weeks ago was 0.

Could it be the *assumes dead* firefish that rotted somewhere in the tank?

What can I do? I currently only have tap water if you are suggestion water change. Should I still use tap water though?

Test your tap and see if it has nitrates.
What is your current stock? How quickly have you been adding things? Rock and filtration? Feeding what how much and how often?

How do you know the nitrate count in the original posters tap water? I know that my water comes from the tap at about 40ppm nitrate. Once again, just because you are using tapwater doesn't mean it's good advice for anyone else here. If my nitrates were coming out at 5 I still wouldn't do it. That's still 5 more than you get with RO water. OP really you should think about your posts before you post them. I'm not sure it's good advice in any way shape or form to do a 50 percent water change with tap water. Especially if you know nothing about their source.

Personally, I think your habits are catching up with you. not trying to be rude at all but how heavy have you been feeding. This is in a 29 right?? We honestly need to know what is going on, like PL said, to know what to tell you. I've looked through your posts so I could get info on your current tank and to be honest, I got tired of reading them.

I would start by testing your tap. It could be the source. 1 dead firefish even in a 29 gallon will not cause that big of an issue.
If it tests out bad, then you will have to do something about your water source. The machines can be hit or miss. I would definitely bring a TDS meter and your test kits if you go that route. Many times the stores will neglect the machines, and after the filters become expired, you can end up with water even worse than the tap source.
Feeding is also a main cause. Or filtration. How much rock do you have? Also, this is a biocube correct? When was the last time you changed out the filter elements and got back there for a good scrubbing?

Have you checked the expiration of your test kit or gotten a 2nd reading from another kit?
