which design you guys like better or prefer, the u-tube design or tubeless design, I believe called the wier design. I read on lifereef.com that any design that doesn' t use a tube is inferior to a tube design, of course they sell tube overflows. Just curious what you guys thought.

I am using a homemade u-tube style overflow. I am happy with it because it is all gravity fed and stays primed when the pumps are off. I am sure the commercial versions are far better than mine as well. That being said, I have several friends using the wier style (I believe those are the kind that require a water pump to maintain a siphon). They are happy with theirs, in spite of the occasional cleaning it needs and some micro air bubbles once in a while. I still think u-tubes are best for HOB overflows, but that is really just my opinion.

The only thing that I dis-agree with is, the u-tube type doesn't have a way to "continuously" remove bubbles that accumulate after time. Quite the advantage over a flood............................

I second the Utube design. A good quality one that is cleaned regularly will never have problem bubble build up. Instead of worrying about an electric device starting the siphon, the siphon starts itself. One side of the tube is longer than the other, so via gravity and the properties of water, it starts up again every time. Run a long bristly pipe cleaner through it if it starts getting icky with whatever, and it's ready to go for another long while.

I would prefer the Utube style.
