yes it's an external Poseidon p4
rated for 240gal at 17 foot head pressure and 1225 at 3 foot head pressure
if i move it to where i want it will be at about 6-7ft head pressure.

i think the two are getting confused:
the overflow in the main tank is only capable of handling so many gpm
the skimmer is designed to handle a certain flow rate
the corals desire a certain flow rate
the refugium needs a certain flow rate
the sump requires a certain flow rate

all are seperate from each other

    in regards to filtration flow:
if in the sump an added pump will stir the sediment
in in the main tank power heads will stir the sediment

Through the sump about 4 to 5 x's per hr. is perfect as for internal circulation is totally different then actual water turn over.. Like Guru mentioned people get stuff confused .. some one will call a method or action one thing and in fact its totally different.. Like closed loop nothing could be further from the truth these are not a closed loop but a open loop :) and then you see someone mention DOM's and DOC's are a totally different problem all together. But back to your tank if you say have a 55 gallon tank then you want to move or pass about 225 to about 300 GPH through the sump and pass the skimmer..

This is why its a linked item. 4x turnover will be worthless without proper flow turnover inside the tank. IMO You need enough flow inside the tank to keep detritus in suspension so that the turnover to the sump to be effective. But the internal flow doesn't and shouldn't come primarily from the flow from the filtration (turnover flow).

    There. Did I clairify?

internal flow is supported by koralia p/h's and 2 seperate pumps 1 for fuge, 1 for sump.
where in lies my qustion which you guys have answered, when i move my sump 6feet below my tank will i get enough return flow from my pump to support my skimmer?

to make it easy, the skimmer should have its own pump and not depend on gravity flow from the tank.

euro skimmers have an internal pump(s) seperate from the feed pump. depending on your model will depend on the amount of water needed for the skimmer. are you draining your tank into the skimmer?

no, tank drains into sump where skimmer is atm. but my sump and refuge are a single unit
i want to use an old 26 gal i have for my sump but in order to do that i have to put it in the basement under my tank which will move my return pump that much farther below my tank, then i want to take my existing sump/fuge and turn it into just a fuge.
so my question was if i move it about 6-7 feet lower will my return pump be able to handle the head pressure to accomodate the skimmer for proper turnover rate.
