I bought these as wild caught true percs just wonering if they really are? They are very small about an inch. They have a pretty think black outline around the white bands just cant really tell from the pics.

Does it matter? I have a wild one and some tank raised ones, and I bought one 9-10 years ago or so and don't remember what she is. lol. I've read the only real difference is how many spines in the top dorsal. One has 10 and one has 11.

But there is great variation in the number of spines within each species. Some have as few as 7, as many as 13. Not a definitive method by any means. And I defy anyone to count spines on a swimming clown

Definitely looks like percs to me. Look at the eyes- those are perc eyes

It really doesnt matter I was just wondering if they are percs so I can look foward for them to get some more black in them as they mature. I only paid 15 for the two.

Well, I am pretty sure these are true percs. The black marks between the white and orange are thicker than my ocellaris, which drives me to the true perc determination. Hard to tell. Where do they swim? True percs like the top of the tank. Ocellaris like the middle of the tank.

And the spines on top will give an indication, but it is not a true test. You can have an ocellaris and true perc side by side with the same amount of spines on their dorsal fin.

Look at the eyes. Percs have orange around their eyes. Occs eyes are pure black. Not a great picture, but those look like perc eyes

They are normally hanging out at the top of the tank. I will try to get better pics tommorow if that will help identify what they are better.
