I would not get too stressed out. I am sure he will get out on his own once he is done being stressed out. If he is still there in the morning then you may have to do a rescue mission.

Will it be unusual if he isn't out in a few more hours? Also, would turning off the light help coax him out?

my trigger was in a hole for two days now he is out all day. It's common for triggers to do that when you first get them, I would let it come out on it's own.

they call them triggers cause of there top fin will lock them into a hole, Its there defence mechaninzum "sp is way off there" from predator fish . If its in head first you pullin on his tail will only lock it in tighter and stress it more...

Just relax turn the light's out and wait it out....

Mine did this on occasion due to friends tappin on the glass or just suddend fast movements when it was first in the tank ....

    Good luck...

PS: would it be better to be pitch black, or have very dim light?

turn the tank lights out.. if there ambient light from the room or tv.. that will be fine.... just as long as its alot darker than if the tank lights was on...... When in doubt turn off all light sources in the room but Tv.. then it will be a waiting game....
