I like to give them a good scrub down before I use them...mold release residue and other contaminants that might be on them...otherwise they make a great water storage container.

I know some, like the brutes, are made of food safe plastic while others are not. Would it not be best to use those we know will not leach plastics into our water? Has anyone had any experience with this effecting their tank?

I've used Brutes and other "cheaper" brands. While it's true the Brutes are certified as "food grade" I've never had any issues with any of the others I've used.

+1 on scrubbing for mold release residue. I work at an injection molding facility, we don't do anything that big though. The mold release we use is "food grade" but I still wouldn't trust it. Its not just mold release residue that could be in there, anything that the company cleaned the mold with or residual oil/grease from machining could still be in there, and the high injection pressures in the mold causes all sorts of stuff to push out of the steel.

I have 2 with dollies. One for RODI/new SW, and the other I use for WC water. I do however bleach them about every 4-5 months just to be sure they are clean. They were new and never had garbage in them.
