    Personally, I would do:

    Bottom---Red Plate /GFO / Foam Disk / Carbon / Red Plate / Foam Disk---Top

The only reason I would do this is that the GFO dust is worse for the corals than Carbon dust.

ok, should i leave room inbetween the gfo and the foam disc so it will tumble?
or i guess should i leave room inbetween the carbon and gfo so they both do?
    im confused lol

I mix the two together. The foam discs are so coarse they don't trap any fines anyway. The media will stratify or layer on its own according to the specific gravity of the medias.

Agree, although if you rinse the GFO thoroughly it is no issue.

Yes, leave room as the Gfo needs to tumble (ideally). If mixed together with the carbon I doubt you will achieve the tumbling as the compacting combo will hinder it.

Depends on what you are using. Carbon should not tummble... it will just wear away. It needs to be held in place. GFO needs to tumbble slightly just to keep it from sticking together. So GFO on bottom then carbon up top with sponge holding it in place.

so i set it up last night. i tried with carbon on top of the gfo but all it does is move the foam disc down, because its so heavy. it wont let the gfo tumble. so i redid it with just gfo for now and am running carbon in a bag under my outputs of the overflow box. i guess ill just have to switch it up periodically between the 2.
any other ideas how to run both?

Yep, as I said before mix them together, they will stratify on their own.

I mixed the two together in the past but I had to be careful which carbon I used, my pump for the TLF was a higher output and pushed too high of a water flow for using the carbon I had, so I just went back to the PhosGuard and now I run two units of Chemi-Pure Elite in the TLF phos. reactor.
