Not the hobby but the attempt to utilize MB7 and Bio-fuel. I have Cyano that just won't go away no matter what I do. For me it's just not worth it.

Cyano can utilize carbon sources and does not need nitrate as it can fix atmospheric N2. So you may just be feeding it and starving its competition at the same time. Run lots of GFO and carbon. Do regular water changes, siphon out what's there and it will go away.

Yes I plan to do so. And, place these bottles of MB7 and Reef Bio-fuel far away.

MB7 seems to work, don't know about biofuel. I wouldn't buy it, Vodka and Vinegar are cheaper and work fine... However, carbon dosing is not as effective against phosphate as nitrate. So, as mentioned, you remove the nitrate and the only thing left that can survive and utilize the remaining phosphate is cyano. Just basic nutrient competition. Every organism in the ocean has a niche or two. Cyano has a few and you found one. If your nitrates go up and phosphate goes down something else will pop up. It's all really just a big balancing act.

Cyano other than being ugly though isn't the worst thing that could pop up. At least it has some possible benefits due phosphate consumption and mutualistic nutrient cycling with benthic bacteria. If you keep your nitrates down and do the other things mentioned it should go away and you should be in good shape.

So do you think I should continue with the dosing and keep treating the cyano or stop and treat the cyano?

How much GFO are you running now? Also, remind me what your tank size is. Are you using RO/DI water and testing the TDS to make sure it's at 0? Assuming you had some N without carbon dosing, then as long as your keeping everything in check, the cyano and carbon dosing will be effective at keeping other nuisance "algae" at bay.

If you don't have problems with N, then carbon dosing may not be necessary. Although, it may be helpful for other reasons, using it for such is more advanced though. So, sort of depends on your goals for carbon dosing. What were they?

So, anyways, other than looks, there is no immediate critical need to get rid of the cyano. Personally, if your not running a ton of GFO already, I would try adding some and doing the other things mentioned for 2 weeks. Most likely it will go away and not come back.

Adding GFO with carbon dosing is just a multipronged approach. This should be beneficial. Also, though, should probably check to make sure your within the recommended guidelines of the buifuel. And what type of protein skimmer do you have?
