I have always used packaged sand from the LFS which was "live". But since I'm going with a larger aquarium this time, buying from the internet seems to be the cheapest when bought with the rock. Any thoughts on using Bahama Aragonite sand? It looks dry. It's from MarcoRocks. Should I also get a 5lb. bag at the LFS to seed it?

Can you get a cup or so of sand from an established tank? Ask your LFS people to help here (the least they can do). I always wanted MarcoRocks sand. That Bahama Aragonite is great and comes from a reputable company. I wouldn't spend extra $$ for 5lb of "live" sand that is actually pretty much dead. If you have live rock, that should be enough to seed your new sand.

yea, I have plenty of sand, I'm going to be breaking down a 20g and a 5.5g so I guess I can use that. I was just a little concerned about using the rocks and sand form them because I have a little bit of a cyano problem and didn't want to carry any over. Would it just die off during the cycle?

I have the marcorocks sand in both the DT and the fuge. just be careful about getting a powerhead too close to it until it has developed a good bioload that will help keep it in place as long as you don't point a powerhead right at it :p
my inverts and gobies love it.

Will do, thanks for the advice. I'm going to be using an Vortech mp40 I really don't know how much those stir up the sand.

I just recently used the same sand from Marco Rocks. I did rinse it thouroughly before putting it in the new tank and then just used a couple cups of old sand to seed it. As said above keep powerheads away from it as it is really fine and will blow around.

Did you rinse it with saltwater or RO water or just tap water?

first time I used it I rinsed it with RO water, but I dont bother rinsing it anymore, it will cloud the water for awhile but it will settle in less that 2 days
