I guess the only way to do this, is to drill another hole...?

Assuming you have a pre-drilled tank with 2 holes you dont HAVE to drill another hole. you use the 2 holes it comes with as drains, one primarmy with the gate valve to tune it and keep the water level where you want it and another one as an emergancy drain, then run your return up and over the tank edge and back into the water.

I can get some pictures of mine if you want

Yes. I would love some pictures!
How do you resolve he siphoning issue with the return line, in the event a power failure?

Here is the picture of my drains from underneath. on the left is my main drain and is 3/4 plumbing. the left side of the tee has a ball valve to control flow to the fuge area and the right side is a gate valve to control the overall flow and control the level of water in my overflow. the right side is 1/2 plumbing and is my emergency drain, it only gets used if my main drain gets clogged or something and has no valves at all.

This is my return line. i have braided nylon coming off my Mag 7 return pump into PVC i secured to the back side of my stand. it goes to a tee into my media reactors with a ball valve to control flow for my GFO. it continues to 3 90 degrees into my tank.

this is my solution right now for the siphon break. 2 small holes drilled above the water line. the water hits the back wall of my tank and trickles down and is almost silent. some water still gets siphoned back out but its not more than my sump can handle.
