encrusting just means hard and spreading (will cover a rock)... no biggie..
there are a bunch of encrusting corals.. montie is the first that comes to mind.

I would still watch it though

I have someting similiar in my tank. I just wipe it off. It looks like cotton when removed from the rock.

Thanks for the help...but I tried to remove it and its definitely not cotton like. Its very hard and very attached. I cant even get a blade under its edges to try to pry it off. The two rocks it attached to are now completely fused together. Its still just working through the polyps though....no harm yet! :-/

I'm not sure, but I would guess sponge too, maybe read a little out here and see if you can determine if it's any of these. Does it have any openings in the surface at all?

No. No openings.....I have been looking at images of sponges of so many types. Cant seem to find a match. The surface is hard and kinda resembles a pearl. What seems weird to me is that some of the surfaces of the rock that once were covered are now re-exposed, like its moving...not just spreading. Local guy checked it out and he said he never saw anything like that in any tanks he's ever had or maintained. As long as its not harming my colonies....I guess its just interesting to keep an eye on.

    OK... I am just sick!

Just got back from a 1 week trip to Freeport in the Bahamas. Talk about beautiful! Did a ton of snorkeling and It was just awesome! Reefs were incredible.

Get back home.....and my tanks have been boiled! A/C got turned off and the guy that was taking care of my tanks didn't notice how hot it was until it was too late. He came in on the afternoon of the 5 day and said the house temp was 95 deg. and the tanks were reading in the high 90's as well. So needless to say....Just about lost everything! Some mushrooms, polyps and zoas survived. The hermits survived. One tank had an anemone and as you can guess that killed all in that tank! Lost all my ricordea, lots of paly's, the goni, all my frags, and of course all my fish!

Like I said....I am just sick! Still trying to see what I can recover.

But the "sponge" is still looking ok! Figure that!
