My normal running temp is 79. but it's the swing that can cause the problem But I don't think 2.6 degrees is too bad. Check and make sure your heaters is set correctly and turns on and off when it should

Does the heater have a light? It will be on when the element is warming the tank. If it doesn't have a light you will have to feel it. You can definitely feel when it is on.

Your pumps, lights and powerheads all heat the water too. So even if your room temperature is 78 degrees all that stuff running may increase the temperature of the water to 80. If the heater is set to 79 it will quit trying to warm the water once the water temp exceeds 79.

I keep my tank set to 80. It will on occasion rise to 84 if the house gets too hot. I haven't seen issues with those temps or a 4 deg swing.

You can also set up a fan to blow across the surface of you water. This will help cool the tank due to evaporative cooling. You will need to top off more often though.

You may want to raise the temp of your heater to 80. That will keep the tank temp more stable if your house is warming up during the day.
