Hey everyone.. We are setting up a temporary tank to hold our fish tell we get our large one cycled.. We have two clowns, royal gamma, sixline wrasse, and a damsel.. I know your not suppose to add that many fish to a little 5gal. especially when its not mature enough:-/.. but we just dont know what to do with our fish:confused:.. We want to put them into the 5 gal but it is not even cycled yet.. We want to get our big one done.. I guess what I am asking is what would you guys suggest us to do? We dont have any fish stores close to us.. the closes one is a pet-co and I wouldnt trust them with our fish:(.. and the closest actual fish store is about 2hrs away:-/.. So we cant just take the fish to the store tell we have our tank cycled... We dont want to get ride of the fish either.. Im stumped...

This might be a dumb question but can't you just leave them in your 26 gallon tank. The 5 gallon is way too small.

Yes as 1st time mentioned what about the 26 gallon tank? Where is that and all the sand and rock that was in that tank?
The 5 gallon tank is going to be a death trap! For a tank to cycle you are looking at a month or so and you definitely do not have that kind of time with maintaining those fish in a 5 gallon tank.
In my opinion, instead of having the fish die, and I assure you they will under those conditions, I would bring them to Petco and set up something there temporarilly. At least they have a better chance of survival till you get the big tank ready to go!
You have to think of the fish and their ability to survive...
    Good luck!

If the water conditions in the 5 gal. don't kill them, they will kill each other. Where'd the 26 gallon go? While I would not recommend it because it is very stressful to the fish, many people use clowns and damsels to cycle. They can likely survive the cycling conditions. I do however strongly recommend not putting them in a cycling tank to save the stress on the fish.

Can you use old tank water/LR/Sand to shorten a cycle on the 5g and then work on your redo?

I mean, so what if you get bryopsis in the 5 gallon right? I would use that to make a short cycle and wait on the redo.

Bc of the amount of fish, I would cycle with the 2 clowns and damsel.

I agree with you, I wouldn't use PetCo either for this. no frickin way. My above suggestion is a last ditch sort of suggestion. I would probably end up calling the 2 hour away LFS and working it out over the phone and then making the trip.

Good luck. I'm sure this is painful for you.

Sorry guys I should have said what happened to the 26gal.. We have bryopsis in it and we may have to re-do it... I think we may have to call the fish store that is 2 hr away.. I dont want anything dieing.. but hopefully this we can safe our tank.. Now that I have more people talking to me about it, it looks like I have more options..

I am not sure of your whole situation and type of filtration you have ....But rubbermaid tubs are cheap or should say decently priced... And buy or get one and have a rubbermaid tub bigg enuff to house your kids till your bigger tank is ready..? Just a couple of cents from my mind....

Yeah....as stated above, you need adequate space. So, if that is not a possibility, then I would see if the LFS a few hours away will take them in for trade and give you credit. Then start your cycle on the big tank. At the end, go back to your LFS, pick out one good sized fish (because you do not want to add too much to any new (or mature) tank all at once. If there is any leftover credit, get some supplies.
