I have had my temp set at 77 on the dot and I just recently added a skimmer and the temp seems to climb to 80-81. The only way I can get it down is to leave the hood open and light off. my question is how can I get the temp to stabilize?

And the tank is in a basement where the temp never gets above 70 so thats not an issue.

raise the temp on your heater to 80 and put fans blowing across your sump and if you don't have a sump put them blowing across your display.

why would you want to do that?? 80 degrees is a perfectly acceptable temp for your tank and seems to be an easier fix. Really this hobby is difficult enough. don't make it tougher on yourself. For what it's worth, I run my sps, clam tank at 80 - 82

Yeah I know what you mean 77 is what I read everywhere and I thought that was like the best thing. I just don't want it to get any higher then 80

my chiller is set to intentionally turn on at 82. There is a natual daily fluctuation on most of the reefs so I try really hard to mimic that. Also, alot of corals like the higher temperature than 77

My tank fluctuates several degrees throughout the day depending on the weather. 77-82. Mines been as high as 87 without any noticeable issues. Some people think that your temp shouldn't fluc more than 1 degree ever. Some people think that it makes the corals stronger by slightly fluctuating. Who knows. I try to keep it around 80. A digital thermometer is a must.

i just use a plain old alcohol thermometer to verify the sticker on on the outside. My temp always goes from about 80-84 from night to day. depending on the day. I wouldnt let this happen in your tank. if your house isnt air conditioned then you will need a window one or a chiller.

If the temp went up when you added the skimmer then I would use an external pump to run the skimmer instead of a submerged one. The pump is where your added heat is coming from. My tank fluctuates only 0.5 degree between chiller coming on and heater. I keep my water almost constant to keep stress off the livestock.
