I don't really want to set up a fuge for my tank. One, because I can't drill it and it wasn't really made to have one with out much work on my part. Two, I have terrible luck with plumbing and will definitively have a living room full of water some day. Anyway, I had an idea for a tank and I am aware I will have to take this slow to even consider getting any sort of balance out of this set up.

Is it true Maidens Hair isn't generally eaten by herbivorous fish? If so, could i let it grow in a corner of my display tank as a refuge for my pods to grow and breed?

Then, I had this other idea of growing Grape Kelp in the tank as well so if I had a herbivorous fish it could munch on it some. If I had enough would it be safe to assume one fish wouldn't be able to destroy it all if I had enough grown up before I added the fish?

Then I could have some plants in the tank, a few corals, and a few fish and it would almost be a neat balance. I'm going to fail miserably aren't I?

I just liked the idea of having a fish that loves pods, and a fish that loves plants and just trying to set them up with a food source they could eat at their leisure. Lowers my maintenance and looks cool to boot.

Sounds like a neat idea, and I don't see why it won't work. You didn't say what size tank, though. I would think the larger, the better for that setup; otherwise, you might have some difficulty keeping the corals and plants separated. You will need to research the plants you plan to keep, as some can turn sexual and pollute or even poison your tank, and some will just try to overrun it.

The issue with the idea is that fish will still be able to get to the pods. It would help with the pod population a little, but would not be like a fuge.
