    Hi,

I have two submerged Seio 1100 series water circulation pumps (21 watts per) and one Mag 5 submerged water pump. Other than those devices then there is nothing else running in the water. I am concerned that my aquarium is constantly about 10 degrees warmer than the house temperature. My house is kept at 72 degrees and the tank runs about 82 degrees. The lighting system is suspended about a foot above the aquarium. This temperature of the aquarium is the same whether it is day or night so the lights above are of no effect. So I have come to the conclusion that the 3 submerged pumps are raising the tank temperate 10 degrees. It is a 110 gallon aquarium. Can anyone confirm that this is normal for 3 submerged pumps to heat the water this much? Thank you for your help!

Have you cleaned the pumps ever? I had a maxi-jet jam and really heat the tank up once. Do you have fans on the tank at all?

I would add some fans. On my 75gal when not running a fan it hits 84 during the day and 83.8 by the following am. Also 10 degrees warmer than my house. It only takes a tiny little fan hitting the surface to bring it down nicley.

Evaporational cooling is the best for keeping water temp under control, without spending alot of money on a chiller. Powerheads generate alot of heat due to the magnets and the impellers.

I also had this issue with my 90 but my lights are only 3" above the water. Put a little fan on your sump blowing across the water and you will see a nice drop.

A fan blowing across the surface usually helps. There is this fan that is available at AquaticEco that has like four fans in it or something. My LFS uses them on almost every tank and they help a lot.

Also, try shutting down the SEIO pumps for one day to see what kind of temp difference you get. SEIO's are little better than maxijets but they still produce some heat. You may want to consider a Tunze if you find that SEIO's are the problem.

Another believer in fans in the sump over here. Surprising how much action similar threads are getting right now.

BTW, a small 9" AC clamp-on fan from Menards or Walgreens will only set you back $10 and has huge flow vs. a computer style fan. For a sump vs. a hood it's a better deal.

I am going to try turning off the pumps and seeing how much the tank temp lowers. I already tried cleaning all the pumps and that made no difference. My next thing will be to try a fan and see how much a difference that makes. Thanks everyone for all your tips.

I have had some submersible pumps generate a lot of heat. I am curious to know if that was the culprit. It might only be one of them. I noticed on some of them you could feel the heat coming off of them. Good luck and let us know what it turned out to be...
