Are there any tangs you could all recommend as being able to do well (not just survive) in a 58g reef?

    Other fish:

2 Ocellaris clowns, 1 potter angel, 3 chromis.

I was looking at some really tiny juvi sail fins, but i know they get way too big too fast... I want something that can stay in the tank. Still, they were like 1" long at the most...smallest sailfin's I've seen for sale.

Tomini Tang would be your best bet.

Kole tang or tomini tang would probably be the way to go. also I know it's not recommended but I've seen tons of people with very healthy looking yellow tangs in a 55 gallon.

I would only house a small tang in a 58. When it got medium size, I would trade it in for another small. I generally don't recommend tangs in anything less than 75 and that is pushing it. They like to swim and prefer a longer tank.

like jptrson said a flame fin would be your best bet but I still wouldn't try it. It's just really not fair to the critter.

yeah, I'll probably skip on the tang until I set up my bigger tank when I move.

Tonysreef: a sailfin gets to be 16" or so in the wild, and close to in a tank.... I doubt it's a "large" sailfin in a 55... if it is that's just cruel. If I were fish sitting a 16" sail fin in a 55g tank i would fish nap it and sell it back to the LFS while the owner was away :p

Anyways... back to the LFS in a few days to see if I see something I like... then back to here to see if it's ok :)

I'm not an expert by any means but we have a Tomini Tang in our 55 and so far hes not shown any signs of stress. Doesn't pace the tank, shows no signs of aggression, eats great AND spends the days picking at rocks, powerheads, sand, etc. Great worker and a really neat fish ;D
