I have a cloudy film on the surface of the water in my tank. The parameters seem to be fine and the fish and coral seem to be normal. I recently added som phosban in a filter bag in my sump sock. I was sure to clean the media good before adding to the sump. My water is clear and everything is normal, except the cloudy surface. I am thinking it has something to do with the phosban. Is this normal?

Your probably looking at either a bacterial bloom, or an over abundance of nutrients. Are you running a skimmer on the tank?

If you don't have a sump with a water surface overflow, like myself, you'll get a buildup of oils and scum build up on the surface, paper towels or newspaper can suck it up,but it will come back(i just soak up as much as i can when i do water changes). Also make sure you have plenty of surface aggitation.

Yes that oily stuff is normal if you don' have good surface agitation or a skimmer with a surface skimming attachment. You can point a power head to get some rippling on the surface. This will help with gas exchange too.

agreed with most of above.although i didnt want to i recently added a spray bar on the return pipe, just to get a ripple effect, and it has dramitically reduced the film on my water....another tip, have you thought about a rotating deflector on a power head? hope these suggestions help....
