    Definately worth the time and effort, also extremely easy to build your own and save about 1/2 to 3/4 of the cost of a commercially available sump no matter how good or bad your DIY skills are.

    +1. The sump is hidden usually so even if your building skills are low you can save a lot of money by making your own.

    Yes, twofold--gets things out of your tank so it looks pretty, and more functional if you include a fuge. I'm in the process of making my own right now and can't wait until I get some chaeto growing and get some stuff out of my tank.

    Also adds more water volume which is always a good thing!
