I used pvc on mine. It extends down just below the water line and I have a gate valve on the end of it. I also have a ball valve on the return line like you do. By adjusting the valves, I was able to make the system completely quiet and has no bubbles running into the sump.

I have an eshopps pf-800 and the newer models have a small tube glued in the drain tube to minimize the draining noise. They suggested placing an airline tube into the PVC drain tube and move it up or down to find the sweet spot to stop the sucking noise. It worked fine with my'n, but I am getting bubbles when the water enters my sump.

I actually saw the air tubing video linked somewhere and tried it. Am I supposed to have the airline tubing down in the smaller tube that is glued inside the bigger pvc pipe inside the overflow?

Ricoop, that's exactlly what I'm thinking of doin but had a freind tell me not to because I need "movement" in the sump. A little ridiculous since water automatically moves thru it. I am going to try and slip a pvc pipe inside my bulkhead under the water line and see what happens

Here are a few things from what I can see. First that drain hose has too go completely, like others have stated its too long, but the ridges in it will restrict flow, allow build up in the spaces in the ridges and make one heck of a lot of noise when water with air travels through it.

Second install a piece of PVC on the other side of the bulkhead where your filter sock is that goes into the water. This will muffle the splashing in your sump. Speaking of your filter sock I have never been a fan of them. They are too much maintance and if not monitored can make a mess when they clog up.

i personally didnt like the idea of the filter sock, but it came with the sump and without it, the river running through my apt. is unbearable lol.

What kind of hose do you recommend using coming down from the overflow? Something like vinyl tubing like i have my return hooked up for is there another option?

You're always going to have bubbles going into your sump. It's mixing water and air that then splashes into your sump. If that doesn't create bubbles then your skimmer will for sure. That is why you're suppose to have a baffle to breakup the bubbles before going into your return.

Speaking of bubbles. You want bubbles in you sump in general, considering this is the process you are adding air back into your water. If not you will be depriving your livestock of air.

I hear ya. You can use vinyl tubing, but I would use black to prevent algae growth. I used SPA flex aka flexible PVC, but you can not use regular PVC cement on it.

Check out my 90gal thread. My DT is in my theater room and my sump is in a fish room I built in my basement. So I do have an idea of keeping my tank quite. ;)

Like a bunch of us in here, I built my sump/refuge out of a glass tank. A lot cheaper, you can buy one anywhere, and you can customize it anyway you want to.

computerjohn your build thread is one of the first things i stumbled across when i joined the site. Amazing!

I will be hitting lowes or home depot on Monday to grab some different tubing. What kind of cement can i use with flex pvc? Im wondering if i can somehow attatch the flex pvc to the 1in piece of pvc i glud into my bulkhead on my overflow.

Thanks for the complement. I know I stated what the cement was on my thread and I could not find it locally here in Massachusetts, so I ordered it. You maybe able to find it at a spa supplier. You can glue flexible PVC to regular PVC using the special cement. The only thing is do not use PVC primer on flexible PVC, just use cement.
