Yeah, I skimmed through some threads of people that said do not run one without a GFCI.

But everyone also says all of your outlets near your tank should be GFCI ;)

I use ground probes on most of my tanks, and all of the outlets are GFCI.

You are grounding the tank every time you put your hand in the there which is why we try to avoid stray voltage.;)

Not trying to open a huge can here (can of worms), or even link you to the many threads, including my own thread on this.

when I have a small nick on my hand or something, and put it in the tank, you can then feel the slight current, etc.- WITHOUT a grounding probe on your tank.

I have the GFCI (adapters in my case), and a DIY grounding probe on my system.

I can also show you a link on another board, where a popular member on that board was found dead by his wife, sitting by his sump, hand/arm still in the water- he was shocked to death.- no kidding
Obviously, he didn't have a GFCI, which I think would have cut the power when when the current grounded thru him.

I ran my multimeter on my tank- added the grounding probe, it went from something like 6 or 13v, to 0. Some say, but now, it's just completing the ciruit to ground, yes, I know, and I'm sticking to it.

Stray voltage isn't good for anything really. Especially you when you stick your hand in the tank... It's resulted in a few human deaths FWIW.

How do you test for stray voltage?
