We just recently added a foxface rabbitfish and a firefish goby to our fish only aquarium. The goby has adjusted well and is swimming around and eating his fill, but the rabbitfish is hanging out on the bottom of the tank. It was spotted last night after acclimation, which I know means it was stressed, but now is normally colored again but still not swimming. Is this normal?

It may just be adjusting to its new environment but it's hard to say. Can you tell us a bit more about your tank? How old it is, what other kind of fish are in it, etc.?

It is a 55g fish only tank that has just been re-established after a move, but left some of the water so it should cycle quicker. The only fish in it right now are a 2" percula clown, the rabbitfish and the goby, and the clown and goby seem to be doing just fine.

Kinda small for a Foxface. When did you set the tank back up?
Try to keep the lights off if possible to help keep stress down.

ive found the foxes can be a bit flaky. mine will just hang around under an overhang for quite extended periods of time. maybe too lazy to swim , lol, then it will be back out motoring around , hopefully its just that type behaviour. what are your params , since theres possibilty of some sort of cycle.

I suppose the bigger question would be "How long was it down?"

I think foxface rabbitfish are skiddish to begin with, i've had mine for more than 3 months now. It gets along well with all my tankmates but i have observed that early in the morning(when the lights first go on) and later at night (close to lights off) he seems to stop swimming socially and goes all camoflauge and flares his spines out and just floats...sometimes almost strait up and down. Also i can't go near the tank without him noticing and as soon as i'm present he goes camo so I think their afraid of their own shadows..

My last foxface was pretty shy. Sucks cause it increases the chances of being stung. They will dart about when your hand is in the tank working on it. Kinda like reaching for a dog that bites.
