starting a nano (10 gal)

    hi again everyone, i have recently decided to start a nano tank and was wondering if i should go barebottom or use the same aragonite that is in my 46 gallon. any help would be great. thanks in advance.

    I just started a 5.5. I put about half inch sand bed in from my 12 gal nano dx I recently took down....

    It should be ok (aragonite) , it will come with some helpful bacterier aswell maybee you could do a 5gl water change in the 46g just off the surface ,and use it in the 10gl to get the cycle kicking along.

    I like sand so I say go with the aragonite over a bare bottom tank. You don't need a ddep sand bed if you are worried about junk building up in it. I just think you will be more happy with the look.

    Agree...

    A bare bottom tank does not stay "bare" long as detritus, etc. builds up. Takes more maintenance to keep looking "clean." --- Sand, even very thin layer looks much better...plus added bio-filter benefits.

    the tank i am going to take the substrate from is not really in the best of conditions, so how should i clean it to insure that none of the problems carry over to my new tank?

    yes get new.the live rock will easily and quickly seed your sand in a small tank like that.also i used a plenum in my daughters tank and it helped alot.
