I had an orange Fromia Star in my reef system for 3 years ....he was happy and amazing to watch. Never an issue ...grew from 3" in diameter to about 6". While a very slow acclimation is best, it was well worth it. I'll post pics from my laptop tomorrow.

    +1.

Dont put a starfish into a small tank. Dont put a starfish in a tank that is not well established. Starfish feed on the mircofauna that are present in the sandbed. They eat it faster than it can replenish itself (unless you have a very large surface area of sand, and a DBS, which it will kill quickly). Your starfish will slowly starve to death. oh sure, it will look healthy for a few months, then out of nowhere it will just die. Also if you have an established DBS then you are better prepared to keep 1 alive for quite some time, but that star will quickly eat all the reasons that the DBS was established for to begin with.

Asternia stars are a cute replacement. they stay small and I have TONS in my tank. they hang out on the glass a lot and are pretty active during the day. I have a 90 gallon and a 33. If you get them, dont buy them from a site, make sure you get some from a fellow reefer who has observed them for some time in thier own tank. Some types of asterina stars will munch on your zoas. Nobody is 100% sure which ones will or not, so its best to be safe than sorry and go with some you know you can trust.

Also, I have miniature brittle stars in my 33. They are really cool to watch, though most of the time they stay hidden.

If you set up a predator tank, or just a FOWLR, then a chocolate chip star would be a very beautiful addition, and you can feed it by placing food underneath it.
