So I just bought an AGA 180g tank (72x24x24) and in order to get the lifetime warranty they make you buy the stand. I had planned to make my own stand, but for $300 for their "basic" pine stand, I figured time and cost to build my own would be about the same either way, and how bad could it be, right?

I went with the $300 pine stand and it came in before the tank....

and I'm looking at it, and wondering if it can hold 2000 lbs of rock and sea water.

It's made out of 2x4s and 1x6 paneling, with a simple rim that looks like the tank would be exceptionally easy to knock off of.

Is anyone using one of the AGA Pine stands, and if so, are they well made enough to hold the weight, or should I just go ahead and build my own?

    Thanks!

    -Doug

Yes not a problem once you put that weight in it it will tighten up the stands are built to crown up so when the weight is on it will push it all down like a arch .

my aga stand for 75 gal was just 1x4's and thin paneling. same thin rim on top. it held up for the 2 yrs i used it. a 180 gal tank won't get 'knocked off' even empty. that said, they do look flimsy.

Remove the center support or put sump under there first I always pull the center door stop and get it out of the way and put it back in when finished the weight will hold it once its all setteled in Its just stapled in with some wood glue LOL most of you guys would drop over if you saw how a 500,000 home is built :) anyone here who works in homebuilding would tell you . Flimisy as hell till the sheathing and sheetrock goes on

I thought the same thing on my 155 bow. But the friend i got it from had it for 5 years, i have it 3 years now, and no issue at all. The weight is equally distributed over the entire edge. and its not pine. A friend told me what it was and I forgot, but he is a cabinet maker and he knows wood. But its a very strong wood. Pine can compress and bow over time.

I had to load my sump from the top. That being siad, I cringe every time I look at my AGA stand.... BUT.... stands are built in compression. Wood is very very strong in compression. One square inch can hold a ridiculous amount of weight on top. So adding up all the edge that supports the tank, there is a plenty of support. They do engineer them for their purpose.

    .....and your avatar is disturbing.

LOL my avatar was our hull made by Progression Offshore in L.I we watched them Glass that one LOL 250K for the hull and I know how that kick or larger hammer theory works :)

And this is why all car sound system installers never allow one in their shop working area :) It ain't pretty to see them putting all them speakers and amps in a expensive car.
