so please excuse my ignorance but i have yet to set up a tank. i want to set up a tank with an efficent amount of LR and just a skimmer and was wondering will the skimmer filter out the uneaten food and all that junk or will it just skim out the protein?

It will filter some of the food but not much. You need to make sure you feed as much as your fish will eat in 2 to 3 minutes no more. It will help to remove decomposition byproducts and yes protein.

it skims broken down crap...like well crap, food, and other waste in its smallest form..if you choose to have a sump i would def. have a filter sock attached to the water coming into it, it will catch the bigger stuff and you change them out every 3 days or so....and a big clean up crew (hermits, snails) will help in that process too..
