Currently I have a 55 gal on which I am running a CPR bakpak dual with accela pumps. Let me start by sayng I have grown to hate this thing simply due to the noise it produces. I have tried all of the "fixes" I can find...longer air hoses, differatn mufflers, adjust air valve , etc) and if I run both pumps it is loud enough to wake you over night from the other end of the house. Also it seems to pull about 3/4 of a collection cup a week in "green tea" skimmate.

I have decided that the time has come to replace this equipment. I have held onto it as I want to go with a sump and fuge but my current stand will not fit anthing larager than a 10 gal tank under it , i will need to build one that will, but I dont want to spend a couple hundred bucks on a new HOB just to get by a few more months till a stand is built.

My question is this......based on the amount of skim being removed is the skimmer even a "necessary" piece of equipment. With the 80-90 lbs of live rock in the tank providing natural filtration, if I get good water movement could I get away with turning off/removeing the skimmer for say 60 days until I get a sump installed.
The second part of my question revolves around water movement /flow. One thing the skimmer does do well at this point is turn the water over. I am using 2 Korelia 3 powerheads on opposite ends and the skimmer returns top center to provide flow. I am looking to switch to a closed loop using a mag 7 and a SCWD device with 2 locline outlets on each end placed high and low(4 total) and remove the power heads.

Based on this change my question is this......based on the amount of skim being removed is the skimmer even a "necessary" piece of equipment. With the 80-90 lbs of live rock in the tank providing natural filtration, if I get good water movement using the closed loop instead of the powerheads could I get away with turning off/removeing the skimmer for say 60 days until I get a sump installed.

Thank you in advance for your help

What do you have for livestock in there? I think that is a major factor in if you can remove the skimmer or not. I think you would be okay, but depends on livestock.

I guess that would be an important factor.

    Currently have:
    Fish
    Pair of False Perc Clowns
    Green Mandrin
    Tomini tang

    Corals
    fist sized Hammer
2 small ( less than 20 head) Zoa colonys
    1 torch head
Acan group of about 5 or 6 heads
small group of sun coral( 1 nice large head with about 4 baby heads attached to it)

Various cleanup crew hermit crabs, snails etc

you want to be very careful with the acan heads but besides that the corals should be alright. as long as you keep really good water movement and run some carbon you should be fine.
