Hey, I remeber using this in the past maybe when I was setting up my second tank. Is it okay to use a bit of skimmate from an existing tank to start the cycle of a new tank? Or how about actually using the waste water when doing water changes to also aid in the cycle process.

While it might work, I wouldn't really go that route. Skim mate is going to be mostly nitrates. What you need to start a cycle is ammonia. Same goes for waste water (hopefully the tank it's coming out of doesn't have ammonia)!

I thought about the ammonia not being present but I thought it would still work. Regarding the water, I thought that might also work because it was coming from a mature tank.

i think it probably would work well enough. but live rock would be better.

if you want to try dump nasty stuff in the tank take a wizz in it, the ammonia and urea from the urine would jump start your cycle, it would be like spot dosing ammonia

I almost feel sorry for those little things. Iv been trying to catch one to make it live in my fuge to eat the food that gets sucked in there. Poor little things are scared to death of me. I think Ill have to buy one when I set up my next tank or take all the rock out of my tank to catch one.
