Assuming you're using the entire 55g for the fuge, you could put a sponge prefilter on the skimmer intake. It would need to be cleaned frequently, though; excess trapped particulates may release more DOCs than what the skimmer can handle, which would raise Nitrate production and create algae problems in your system.

Your skimmer pump will not harm pods even if a few venture in there.;)

The skimmer pump really shouldn't kill any pods.We were fooling around at an lfs one day and did a few experiments.Amphipods and anything smaller are just fine after being passed through a pump.Even brine shrimp seem relatively unharmed.I know we had a lot of free time on our hands.lol

That's good to know. I always considered a spinning blade/prop a potential hazard to anything that passed through.

We think it has something to do with the pressure wave the blades create. It keeps the blades,or needle wheel from actually hitting them and instead just "pushes"them through. I always thought the pump would chop them up as well.Hence the experiment. ;)
