Silly fragging question?

One of my buddies says that he frags his zoas right in the DT

I would think that this would kill his livestock, right?? I mean I know palytoxin is pretty nasty stuff. What do you guys say?

 

when i have fragged anything its in a small container then i dump the water and wash the container really well
i wouldn't risk cutting zoas in your tank

So now, my zoas are on a large piece of rock. What do you guys suggest I do for this. Should I remove the entire rock to frag the zoas? The rock has to be about 15lbs, LMAO!!

 

I would remove it if you can. I honestly do not cut zoas fragging any more period, its too much of a PITA.
You can get the whole rock out, set it down, and give it a few whacks with a chisel and hammer to break into smaller pieces, then your done! If you can plan it too, you can also just place other smaller rocks around them, When they grow onto those rocks, tear them out and, again, done!

 

put some rocks next to where the zoas are growing and they should grow onto the rock if they are about the same level

Tear what out?? I'm just worried about pulling the connective tissue.

 

Just to clarify, not every palythoa or zoanthid (or other related genuses) carries palytoxin, at least not in dangerous amounts. There may be other things they secrete when they're cut that you may not want in your tank but it's not necessarily palytoxin.

To me its not worth the risk of anything leaking out of any fresh-cut coral, I would always do it outside the tank and rinse it well in tank water after before putting it back in.
